Road Traffic Accidents Abroad

Every year thousands of people travel abroad on holiday or for business. While there, some may unfortunately be involved in a road traffic accident, whether as a driver, passenger or pedestrian. This can result in injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to serious life-changing conditions.

If you are involved in a road traffic accident outside of the UK that was not your fault, you may have grounds to claim compensation for your injuries and financial losses. Our specialist Personal Injury Solicitors can advise you on what you need to do and help you with the whole process. We look at some of the issues you should consider below in Helping your claim.

Helping your claim

If you are injured in a road traffic accident abroad, you should make sure you claim in time and provide as much information as you can.

For car accidents abroad, you usually have three years to make a claim but you should contact us as soon as possible after the accident as some countries have different rules about the time to make a compensation claim.

As the EU exit transition period has ended, the UK has been withdrawn from the Protection of Visitors scheme which allows victims of road traffic accidents in European Economic Area (EEA) countries to claim compensation in their own country and language. This means that claiming compensation for a road traffic accident abroad may be more complicated and in some cases not possible.

If you are involved in a road traffic accident, it is important to note as much information as you can about the driver, the vehicle that hit you and contact details for any witnesses to the accident. If possible obtain insurance information to help your claim. Also, keep hold of any tickets for travel that you have.

We would always encourage you to report your accident to the local police and to your holiday insurers.
