Serious Accident Compensation video transcript

Unfortunately, sometimes the unexpected does happen. We understand that a fatal accident can have a devastating emotional and financial impact on a grieving family.

We also understand how difficult it can be to face the prospect of going through a legal process when you are grieving the loss of a loved one.

We know that it may be anger and grief that initially drives you to contact us to discuss a potential claim. You may want to ensure that no other family has to suffer the same grief that you are going through. We understand this and will ensure that you are given the time and space to talk to us about what has happened and how that has impacted you and your family.

We can speak with you on the telephone, online or in person at a time that is convenient for you.

When your thoughts turn to making a claim, your initial thoughts may well be that you want compensation for the pain and suffering that your loved one went through before their untimely death and that you want compensation for the life that your loved one ought to have been able to lead.

Whilst in certain circumstances the right to claim for that pain and suffering can be transferred to a surviving family member, close relatives may also have a claim for what is known as loss of society.

When you lose a spouse, partner, parent, grand parent, sibling, child or grandchild as a result of someone else’s fault, you can make a claim for the loss of that close relative’s present and future company and guidance. It is a financial award and we do appreciate that no amount of compensation can make up for the loss of a loved one.

Where your loved one also provided support such as financial support or assistance with activities such as housework, child care and other activities of daily living, you may also be entitled to claim a further sum of compensation for the loss of that financial support or the loss of those services.

We understand that making a claim in such circumstances is difficult.

You will be assigned a specialist personal injury lawyer to deal with your claim and that of any other surviving family members. This ensures that the person dealing with your case  understands the impact that the loss has had. Your lawyer will gather in all the evidence required to support all parts of the claim and will do their best to minimise any further stress and grief.

Here at Thorntons, our personal injury team have experience in dealing with serious and fatal accident claims.
