About Angela Wipat

Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in Family Law and Family Mediation.

Angela has practiced exclusively in the field of family law for 30 years and has been accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist since 2005. She joined Thorntons in 2008 having previously trained and practiced in Edinburgh, where she gained considerable experience of family actions in the Court of Session.

Now a Professional Support Lawyer, Angela provides strategic legal support to family law solicitors across the firm. With a deep understanding of Scots family law, she plays a pivotal role in ensuring the family law team is equipped with the latest legal developments, practice guidance, and high-quality resources to deliver exceptional service to clients.

Angela has handled a broad range of complex matters in this field with focus on coercive control, financial provision on separation and cohabitation disputes. She has particular experience in applying family law to a client’s wealth management options including pre and post nuptial agreements.  

With a keen interest in legal innovation and AI, Angela ensures the team keeps at the forefront of digital transformation in legal practice.  She is also instrumental in delivering internal training and mentoring, sharing her expertise through workshops, knowledge-sharing sessions, and tailored support.

Angela, whilst an experienced litigator, supports alternative dispute resolution methods. She is a trained Collaborative Practice lawyer and a member of Consensus Collaboration Scotland. She is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a family mediator. She is a member of CALM Mediation Convenors Group. She is also a member and former office bearer of the Family Law Association.   

Volunteering is important to Angela and throughout her legal career she has supported organisations working with families providing pro bono legal surgeries to service users and training to staff. She currently volunteers as student support for the University of Dundee Law Clinic.  In addition, Angela is a member of the Law Society of Scotland Child and Family Law Committee. She is the Council Member of the Law Society of Scotland for the constituency of Perth.
