Two Thorntons lawyers have been elected to global steering committees for the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), reinforcing the firm’s expertise in complex, cross-border private client work.
Rachel Anderson, Partner in St Andrews’ Private Client team, has been appointed to the Cross-Border Estates Global Special Interest Group Steering Committee, while Stuart Mackie, Partner in Dundee’s Private Client team, has been elected to the Digital Assets Global Special Interest Group Steering Committee.
Both appointments follow a competitive election process involving STEP members worldwide, with candidates required to submit a CV and election statement. Each role is held for a three-year term.
The Cross-Border Estates group focuses on estate planning and the administration of estates across international jurisdictions, addressing the challenges of differing inheritance rules between civil law, common law and other legal systems.
The Digital Assets group provides an international forum for discussion, education and support in relation to planning for and administering digital assets. It also plays a role in driving the development and alignment of legislation in this rapidly evolving area, particularly as practitioners support clients and their advisors following death or loss of capacity.
Rachel Anderson said: “I’m pleased to have been elected to the Cross-Border Estates Global Special Interest Group Steering Committee. With more individuals and families holding assets across multiple jurisdictions, there is a growing need for clear, coordinated approaches to estate planning. I look forward to contributing to discussions that support practitioners in navigating these complexities and delivering the best outcomes for clients.”
Stuart Mackie said: “I’m delighted to join the Digital Assets Global Special Interest Group Steering Committee. As digital assets become an increasingly important part of people’s estates, there is a clear need for greater clarity and consistency in how they are managed. I look forward to working with colleagues from across the profession to help shape best practice and support the development of this evolving area.”
Lesley Larg, managing partner, said: “These appointments reflect the strength and depth of expertise within our private client team. Rachel and Stuart’s election to global STEP committees is a recognition of their knowledge in key areas of estate planning and reinforces our commitment to supporting clients with increasingly complex and international needs.”
