Stuart & Stuart WS has merged with leading Scottish firm Thorntons Solicitors

Stuart & Stuart senior partner Chris Anderson described the merger as a fantastic move for two firms which share a remarkably similar outlook.”

Following the merger, Stuart & Stuarts entire team will transfer to Thorntons. Chris Anderson will transfer as a consultant to the merged firm and John MacKenzie, Fergus Macmillan, Andrew Bertram and Emma Horne will be appointed partners at Thorntons, with Ken Lauder appointed a legal director.

You should have been contacted by Stuart & Stuart about your property sale to advise what will happen next and what you need to do.  If you have any questions you can contact your usual contact on 03330 430150 or email us

If you have an appointment arranged it will go ahead as planned. However you will now be instructing Thorntons. If for any reason the appointment needs to be changed someone will contact you to arrange another convenient date.  Appointments will be carried our virtually or in person where required. 

The office offices at 25 Rutland Street Edinburgh will remain open until 23 April after which time the office will close and the people there relocate to Thorntons offices at Third Floor, City Point, Haymarket, Edinburgh. Stuart & Stuart’s offices at 3-7 High Street Bonnyrigg will remain open however 12 John Street Penicuik will not be re-opening.

If you have used Stuart & Stuart in the past and the firm held a Will for you, you don’t need to do anything at the current time.  Following the merger, all files and documents previously held by Stuart & Stuart are now in the safe custody of Thorntons.  

We appreciate you may be concerned about these important documents and we can reassure you that any documents held on your behalf by Stuart & Stuart will continue to be stored securely by Thorntons.  If you wish to discuss any aspect of your business with us then please feel free to call your usual contact on 03330 430150 or email us.

If you have used Stuart & Stuart in the past and the firm held a Title Deeds for you, you don’t need to do anything at the current time. Following the merger, all files and documents previously held by Stuart & Stuart are now in the safe custody of Thorntons.

Data Protection Notice

As a result of the merger, Stuart & Stuart Solicitors clients’ personal data has been transferred to Thorntons Law LLP. We have added recent files and relevant files to Thorntons’ client management system to ensure the continuity of the legal service you receive from Stuart & Stuart. Legacy files are kept segregated from the main system with restricted access until scheduled deletion.

We have now contacted other clients by post to inform them of the merger and of the next available steps.
