Thorntons strengthens China ties at New Year celebration reception

Leading Scottish law firm Thorntons rang in the Chinese New Year by holding an event aimed at strengthening Scotland’s ties with China.

Jamie Kerr, Thorntons’ specialist in immigration law, hosted a reception at the firm’s Edinburgh offices to celebrate the beginning of the year of the monkey.

Representatives from the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on China, Scotland China Education Network and the Asia Scotland Institute joined figures from private business and politics at the event, which took place last week.

The event, aimed at promoting the services Thorntons offers to businesses with an interest in China and South East Asia, saw solicitor Lisa Mannion give a recital about the Chinese New Year celebration in Mandarin and trainee solicitor Vincent Chung recite a poem in Cantonese.

The readings were translated into English by trainee solicitors Cara McGlynn and Bonar Mercer in front of a packed crowd which included Graeme Pearson MSP (who Chairs the Cross Party Group on China) as well as Deputy Presiding Officer John Scott MSP.

The immigration team also announced that Thorntons will become the first law firm in Scotland to launch an account on Weibo – the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

Jamie said: “Firstly, I would like to thank all our guests for joining us at this reception. It is wonderful to be able to cement the bond of friendship with the Chinese community.

“Forging strong links with China is absolutely key to driving forward our economy. Just last year, a number of multi-billion pound trade deals were signed during a state visit by the Chinese Premier, Xi Jingping.

“A lot of businesses are waking up to the potential of the Chinese economy and Thorntons can offer expert advice on how best to approach this opportunity.

“From advice on obtaining UK visas right through to assisting with property purchases, investments and corporate deals ,Thorntons offers the full package in terms of navigating businesses into the UK.”
