Law for the Elderly

Growing older can often make coping with the ups and downs of daily life more difficult, and from time to time we may find ourselves looking to someone for a bit of extra help or advice. This could include wanting some guidance over issues involved in staying in our own house or moving into a care home, or help with day-to-day financial affairs and planning ahead.

How can Thorntons help?

At Thorntons, we have developed particular expertise in dealing with matters affecting the elderly and have designed our Eldercare service to take away as much of the burden of dealing with legal and practical issues as our clients want.

We can help look after your personal, legal and financial affairs on an ongoing day-to-day basis giving reassurance and valuable peace of mind. We can also give family members practical advice on how to help an elderly relative who may require assistance.

Our Eldercare service, which can be tailored to meet your personal circumstances, includes practical help, guidance and advice on the following:

  • Planning ahead – Powers of Attorney, and Wills and Inheritance Tax planning
  • Staying in your own home  – Applying for Local Authority support, choosing and paying private carers, dealing with household bills and other household arrangements, and moving to sheltered housing
  • Moving to a residential or nursing care home – Choosing a home, making arrangements to move, including the sale of your current home, and financial arrangements and entitlements
  • Other related services – Looking after bank accounts, paying bills, taking care of investments, dealing with tax returns, and arranging visits
