Thorntons Tackles Rising Cost of Stress in the Workplace

A leading law firm is highlighting the legal dangers of stress in the workplace as employers continue to suffer from the rising costs of ill health.

Thorntons Solicitors is working to raise awareness of the impact and financial burdens caused by stress at work and promote a healthy working environment to reduce the negative effects.

More than 130 professionals from across Scotland will gather at Dundee Contemporary Arts for the special seminar designed for managerial staff and HR professionals from a range of business both large and small.

Led by Thorntons HR Adviser (Client Services), Pam Kelly, the seminar will discuss the most significant implications such as potential claims of unfair dismissal, disability discrimination and harassment.

Employers will have to opportunity to see how these claims arise and Thorntons will provide an overview of the steps to take to avoid them.

The seminar will also illustrate practical measures to address and manage stress, as well as comply with legislation and good practice.

Derek Reid, partner at Thorntons, said: “The legal consequences of stress in the workplace are a widespread problem affecting an increasing number of people.

“The cost of suffering from stress or having employees experiencing stress can be high and come with serious risks associated with the issues of
ill-health.

“The results can be negative impact on productivity, damage to relationships and reputations, not to mention the cost of legal action.

“Thorntons feel it is important to highlight these issues due to the impact it can have on individual and employing organisations.

“It’s not just about meeting legal requirements, but promoting good practice to provide healthy working environments to minimise the negative impact of stress.”

Thorntons' Employment Law Unit provides a full range of advice and practical support on all issues relating to employment, including Tribunal services, employment contracts and policies, general employment advice, negotiating services and general HR services.
