New Thorntons Appointment is a Legal Services First

Thorntons has become one of the first legal firms in Scotland to recruit a professional HR adviser to work alongside its lawyers and offer clients specialist advice on employment issues.

Pam Kelly has joined Tayside’s largest law firm in a role that is innovative within the Scottish legal services industry and which will enable Thorntons’ employment law team to offer clients a different perspective on handling employee relations issues.

The new role will see Pam offer additional help with a wide range of HR tasks including development and delivery of training packages, carrying out disciplinary and grievance related investigations and advising clients on the implementation of good practice policies and procedures.

Having recently qualified in HR at Dundee College, accredited CIPM member Pam previously spent two decades working mainly in the public sector, where she held a variety of management posts. Pam lives with her family in Broughty Ferry, and was educated in Perth and at the University of Edinburgh before returning to Dundee College as a mature student.

Commenting on her new role, Pam said: “Many law firms offer employment law advice and also certain HR services, but their experience of HR and employee relations is limited to how they are affected by the strict legal issues”.

“Employing a dedicated HR professional will enable Thorntons to broaden the range of advice and expertise the firm can offer to its clients”.

“By working closely together, I and the firm’s legal professionals will be able to offer a more comprehensive approach on any issue and a level of advice which we believe will be unsurpassed by other firms.”

Established in Dundee more than 150 years ago, Thorntons has 31 partners and employs almost 350 staff across its offices in Dundee, Perth, Arbroath, Forfar and Edinburgh advising on all aspects of the law, both commercial and personal.
