Will-making recession busters boost charity campaign

More Scots protecting their assets to save money

More Scots are making Wills during the recession thanks to a nationwide charity campaign designed encourage people to protect their families.

Tayside's leading legal firm has reported an approximate 20% increase in Wills made during this year's month-long national Will Aid campaign – which allows people to make or update a Will in exchange for a donation towards the charity.

Thorntons Solicitors is the top UK fundraising firm for Will Aid – a charity partnership between solicitors and UK charitable organisations – since 1998, having donated approximately £60,000 to date.

Designed to raise awareness of the importance of making a Will, the initiative has been running on a biennial basis throughout the month of November for two decades and has become the UK's most successful fundraising Will scheme which supports nine UK charities including the British Red Cross, Help the Aged and the SSPCC.

Malcolm Farquhar, Partner at Thorntons, said: "People are constantly looking for ways to save money nowadays and the campaign comes at a time of year when people are thinking about Christmas and the January debt to follow.

"There are a number of complicated and unnecessary problems that can arise as a result of not having a Will, but Will Aid provides an excellent opportunity for people to seek a solicitor's advice and help a deserving cause at the same time as an opportunity to save money and get some peace of mind over their affairs.

"Thorntons has been a long-standing supporter of the Will Aid campaign, and despite difficult economic times we have still had a fantastic response to the campaign. I urge people who have not yet thought about these issues to come forward and support such deserving causes."

Will Aid has also raised nearly £7million in donations towards improving the lives of thousands of people around the world. Tens of millions more have also been pledged in legacies to the Will Aid charities, helping to ensure that vital work can continue to help future generations.
