Tayside Lawyers Top UK Charity Poll

23 June 2005

People in Tayside are the most generous in the country when it comes to using their wills to help those less fortunate than them, according to the leading UK charity campaign Will Aid.

Will Aid has revealed that Tayside law firm Thorntons made the biggest single donation to the charity during the 2004 fund raising campaign.

In 2004, Thorntons’ clients raised over £10,000 for Will Aid – more than any other firm of solicitors in the UK. Tayside has consistently topped the Will Aid charts – Thorntons’ clients helping the firm to raise over £8000 in 2002.

Will Aid is a campaign run by nine of the UK’s best known charities – ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged, NSPCC, Save the Children UK, Sight Savers International, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (Northern Ireland).

During the bi-annual Will Aid campaign, participating solicitors waive the fees they would normally charge clients for making or altering a will. Instead, they ask that clients make a donation to the Will Aid charity.

Shirley Marsland, Will Aid Campaign Manager, said :

"Yet again Thorntons and their clients have demonstrated their generosity by contributing over £10,000 to Will Aid, more than any other single firm of solicitors in the UK.

"This is a fantastic result and on behalf of the Will Aid charities I would like to both congratulate and thank Thorntons for all their hard work.

"The money raised will be used by the Will Aid charities to make a positive difference to the lives of people in need all over the world."

Nick Barclay, Managing Partner of Thorntons, said :

"We’re delighted to have been able to lend our support to this very important charity campaign.

"The response from the public in Tayside to our appeal for Will Aid support in 2004 was exceptionally enthusiastic and it is a wonderful reflection on the spirit and generosity of people in Dundee, Perth and Angus."
