Thorntons, Taysides largest law firm, will open for business in a new home on Monday morning when staff move into the refurbished Nethergate Business Centre in Dundee.
Today (Friday, January 19) will be the firms last day in its current Castle Street accommodation before the move to the 40,000 sq ft Yeaman Shore offices, which have been renamed Whitehall House.
Marking a significant financial investment for the fast growing legal business, the new offices will provide a modern working environment for more than 200 Thorntons partners and staff.
The move, one of the largest office relocations in Dundee in recent years, is the result of the firms rapid expansion with Thorntons business having more than doubled in size since 2000.
Thorntons has occupied the Castle Street offices the Stewart Chambers part of which is B-listed and was previously the headquarters of Stewarts Cream of the Barley since the merger in 1990 of Thornton Oliver WS with Fergusson Robertson & Co.
The firm had extended the offices on several occasions to accommodate expanding staff numbers before deciding on a move. The estate agency division of the firm, Thorntons Property Services which is based in Whitehall Crescent, will be unaffected by the Castle Street relocation.
The firms offices at Whitehall House feature a newly-built reception area, four floors of refurbished office facilities and custom-built meeting rooms with video-conferencing and the latest wireless technology.
Chairman Jack Robertson said: I and many of my colleagues at Thorntons have spent a large part of our working lives in Castle Street and the offices have served us well over the years. However this move is essential and represents a significant investment for us and is a consequence of our growth over the last six years. Whitehall House will offer a more spacious environment for our staff and clients and allows for the continued expansion of Thorntons as a legal firm and major local employer.
Thorntons, which can trace its origins back to its founding by Sir Thomas Thornton in 1857, has grown steadily to become one of Scotlands largest and most successful law firms. It currently has 30 partners and employs almost 350 staff across its network of offices in Dundee, Perth, Arbroath, Forfar and Edinburgh advising on all aspects of the law, both commercial and personal.
