Planning a Street Party for the Royal Wedding?

If you are planning on celebrating Kate and William's wedding by way of a street party, you might be thinking about obtaining a Performing Rights Licence from the Performing Rights Society ("PRS"). For those of you who are unsure of what a Performing Right Licence is, it is a licence granted by PRS to play music that PRS manages, in public, without fear of breaching the music owners' copyright.

Do not fret however if getting such a licence is not on your radar, as the kind folk at PRS have waived the need for such a licence for small community street parties celebrating the royal wedding. So, provided your street party:

  • takes place between 22 April 2011 and 6 May 2011, inclusive;
  • is organised and run by unpaid volunteers;
  • has a total expected attendance/capacity of 300 or fewer; and
  • does not generate a profit,

then you are in clear as far as arranging a Performing Rights Licence is concerned.

For more details about Performing Rights Licences generally please see the PRS Website:

Please bear in mind that each individual council is likely to have its own set of rules and procedures governing street parties and, therefore, you should get in touch now with your local council to discuss practicalities/legalities like road closures, insurance and safety etc.

Happy Street Partying!
