Thorntons will, for the first time, be run by joint Managing Partners from December 1.
Tayside's largest legal firm will be headed up by lawyers Craig Nicol and Scott Milne, who will share the responsibility for the strategic direction and management of the business for the next 5 years.
Although they will share the role of managing the firm, Craig and Scott will each focus on different areas of the business combining their individual knowledge and expertise.
Craig, who up until 1 December, headed up the Business Law department, has been with Thorntons for eight years. Meanwhile Scott, who has worked at the firm for over 25 years was previously head of the firm's Litigation department.
Jack Robertson, chairman of Thorntons, said: "The joint managing partnership is a new approach for the firm. As well respected lawyers in their fields, it is important for Craig and Scott to maintain linkswith their clients and this combined approachwill allow them to do that.
The firm's previous managing partner, Nick Barclay, will resume his full-time role as a partner in the Private Client department, based in the Dundee office.
Scott Milne said: "Nick has held the post of Managing Partner since 2003 and has steered Thorntons through one of its most difficult periods. His counsel and experience will be invaluable to Craig and me as we move forward in our new roles.We are both incredibly proud to be taking on the role of managing partner and will continue to build on the established and commendable values Nick has instilled across the firm.

Clare Macpherson, partner will take over as head of the firm's Litigation department. Clare is based in the firm's Edinburgh office. Lesley Larg, partner and an accredited specialist in intellectual property, will take over as head of the Business law division. Lesley is based in Dundee.
