Thorntons is pleased to announce a merger with the long established legal practice of W.R. Scott and Soutar of Dundee. The seven staff and three partners of Scott and Soutar John R. Scott, Malcolm R.P. Farquhar and David Mathieson will join Thorntons with effect from 1 June 2005, bringing a total of 84 years of experience in the law with them. John R. Scott will retire as a partner, becoming a consultant with Thorntons. The merger will blend the complementary strengths of Scott and Soutar and Thorntons, ensuring that clients of both firms continue to have access to the highest quality, personal legal services. Scott and Soutar was founded in 1938 by W.R. Scott, the father of the firms present senior partner John R. Scott and has ministered to the legal needs of clients in and around Dundee, Fife and district for over 60 years. As a small, family firm based in offices in Whitehall Street, Dundee it has built a meticulously guarded reputation for quality and efficiency of service. Thorntons was established as a legal business in Dundee in 1857 by Sir Thomas Thornton and has grown steadily to become one of Scotlands largest and most successful law firms. Thorntons currently employs over 280 people and has offices in Dundee, Perth, Forfar, Arbroath and Edinburgh. It has a flourishing practice and specialises in private client work, business law, property, intellectual property, litigation and finance.
