Bank lending top of the bill for Tayside businesses

Tayside's business leaders will join forces to discuss bank lending for firms today with Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy MP in Dundee.

Tayside's leading legal firm, Thorntons, will host the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce event at its Yeaman Shore offices, and bank lending will be top of the agenda.

An increase in the number of business loans rejected by banks and a growing trend for companies' borrowing from credit cards reported by European Central Bank (ECB) and Insitute of Directors polls have led some commentators to call for alternative funding support.

Mr Murphy will address hosts Nick Barclay, managing partner at Thorntons, and the firm's chairman Jack Robertson, as well as Chamber members from across the spectrum, including the corporate, manufacturing, property and financial sectors.

Nick Barclay, said: "We hope that coming together at Whitehall House today with Mr Murphy will serve as an ideal opportunity for business leaders from a diverse range of sectors in and around Dundee to share their experiences, express their concerns and share best practice.

"Thorntons has advised businesses operating across Scotland and has built up a sound knowledge of the issues affecting our clients, and we hope to be able to share our knowledge with the Secretary of State and the Chamber."

Alan Mitchell, chief executive of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, added: "We are delighted to have another opportunity to meet the Secretary of State for Scotland. The Government needs to take whatever action is necessary to ensure that financially sound and well run businesses can accessfinance.Economic recovery will be threatened without more business investment."
