Thorntons partner becomes head of Guildry

A partner at Tayside's leading legal firm has been named as the new Lord Dean of the Guildry Incorporation in Perth.

Graham Harding, litigation and family law expert at Thorntons Solicitors, was appointed by the local historic trade organisation this week at its annual general meeting.

Graham, 58, who is based at Thorntons' George Street office, has been a member of the Guildry for more than 15 years, and will play a key role in the celebrations in planningto mark the town's 800th anniversary next year.

Founded by Royal Charter in 1210, the Guildry Incorporation is one of the oldest organisations in Perth.
Originally established to control trade in the town and monitor its development, planning, weights and measures and security – the equivalent of what would come to be the town council.

The Guildry lost most of its powers after a government re-organisation in the early 1970s, but as Lord Dean, Graham will continue to perform the remaining ceremonial duties at civic events including the Kirkin of the Council and the remembrance parade.

The organisation – now recognised as a registered charity – awards a substantial amount of grants every year to members or their families as well as citizens and organisations from Perth and Guildtown who can apply for support. Each application is considered by its management committee at its regular meetings.

Graham, who grew up in Perth, said: "I am very honoured that the members have elected me as Dean. The Guildry is an historic organisation which over the years has provided valuable support to many individuals and organisations in Perth and it is a privilege to have it's stewardship entrusted to myself.I look forward to working with my fellow committee members over the next three years."
