Thorntons hosts free info and advice charity tea celebrating National Older Person’s day

Tayside's leading legal firm Thorntons is holding a charity afternoon tea and free information and advice day to celebrate National Older Person's Day.

Thorntons is hosting Tea at the Point from 11am until 3pm at Discovery Point on Wednesday October 1 to highlight important information on how to protect your assets, access to care services, benefit entitlement and keeping safe at home.

Thorntons' Tea at the Point is supporting the government's Full of Life initiative - a UK-wide programme of activity to raise the profile of the issues surrounding older people and our ageing society.

UK Older People's Day is designed to celebrate the huge contribution older people make to society and economy.

It focuses on creating a positive view of later life through breaking down outdated stereotypes, raising awareness of the opportunities and entitlements for older people across society and tackling social exclusion.

Open to all, the drop in afternoon tea will offer visitors the chance to hear advice from Thorntons' Solicitors on all aspects of financial and legal affairs, with representatives from the Citizens Advice Bureau and local independent care providers on-hand with guidance as well as Tayside Fire and Rescue service who can arrange free home safety checks.

A fundraising raffle will take place for the opportunity to win prizes which include a luxury food hamper donated by George Taylor of Inchture-based Taylor's Regional Foods.

Dundee Heritage Trust is also supporting the event by offering tea and coffee, and cakes will be available for a donation to raise funds for Help the Aged, a charity which fights to free older people from poverty, neglect and isolation.

Sarah Statham, eldercare assistant at Thorntons Solicitors, said: "Many older people in the community are unaware of the services available to them to take the hassle out of their daily lives, so we were keen to hold a fundraising information day on this significant date.

"Thorntons is inviting people to come along and enjoy afternoon tea and a bit of socialising, fundraising for a worthy cause and access to free information and advice from our solicitors and other community groups which could help them to enjoy a better quality of life."

Mike O'Brien, Pensions Minster, said: "Older people make a difference to our country everyday as grandparents, carers, entrepreneurs, volunteers and leaders. Older People's Day is all about bringing people together, from teenagers to older people, strengthening contact across generations."

A spokesperson for Help the Aged, added: "We are delighted that Thorntons has chosen to support Help the Aged on National Older Person's Day. It's great to see a local business giving back to the community in which it operates, and through fundraising for help the Aged and offering advice to senior citizens on a number of important issues, they help us strengthen our efforts to prevent older people from exclusion."
