Thorntons Helps Keep Dundee in the Picture

Guests will be looking up on March 29 when Thorntons solicitors hosts the launch of a photo exhibition based on the fundraising book Dundee: Things Are Looking Up, by local man Gordon Anderson.

The exhibition, in the city’s Apex hotel, will feature 30 one-off prints, specially selected from the 100 photographs which appear in the book taken by Gordon’s son Peter, a professional press photographer.

More than 100 guests from the local business community, many of whose offices feature in the book and exhibition, will attend the launch event on the 29th when they will enjoy refreshments and be able to meet with the book’s author.

Dundee: Things Are Looking Up was launched last year to raise funds to support local heart patients and medical services for them by former heart patient Gordon as a way of giving something back to those who helped him through his by-pass surgery and recovery process.

The appeal has raised more than £8,000 so far through sales of the book and other donations and the exhibition launch will aim to boost that total even higher by auctioning off the unique photos.

Each of the framed, 2ft wide black-and-white shots has been signed by Peter and, have a reserve price of £50.  All money raised through the sale of the limited edition prints will go to the ECHO charity (East Coast Hearts Organisation).

“I’ve been gobsmacked by everyone’s generosity,” commented Gordon on the support for the project so far. “People don’t realise what you go through, not just the operations, but the whole recovery process. It is also very hard on patients’ families.

“We’re now speaking to the doctors to find out what they need. Maybe is it’s a new piece of medical equipment or more basic things like pedometers or keyboards for patients to use during the recovery process as they work on relearning basic skills and abilities others can take for granted.”

Nick Barclay, Thorntons managing partner, added: “Gordon’s determination to make a difference is truly admirable. We are delighted to support the appeal by providing the framed prints for auction and also to help bring a selection of the book’s pictures to a wider audience through this exhibition.”

As part of its sponsorship of the exhibition, Thorntons funded the production and framing of the limited edition prints and the provision of refreshments for guests at the launch.

The exhibition, which is open to members of the public, will begin on March 30th and run for one month. Copies of the book are available from Waterstone’s, Borders, Discovery Point and Verdant Works.
