Thorntons, Taysides largest law firm, has welcomed todays decision by the Scottish Parliament to alter the law governing compensation claims by sufferers of the asbestos-related lung cancer Mesothelioma.
The new legislation will end the dilemma of sufferers who in the past had to choose between claiming damages for themselves or waiting so that relatives could claim after their death.
The law in Scotland will now allow Mesothelioma sufferers to claim full compensation and also give their families the right to pursue a separate, simultaneous claim for their own grief and suffering.
Thorntons litigation partner Gordon McBean, a specialist in personal and workplace injury claims, regularly represents victims of asbestos-related illnesses.
He commented: Mesothelioma is a devastating cancer and most sufferers have a very limited lifespan after diagnosis. Todays change in the law will help to ensure that what is already a traumatic time for them and their families is not made all the harder by an unnecessarily harsh legal process.
Thorntons, which can trace its origins back to 1857, currently has 30 partners and employs almost 350 staff across its network of offices in Dundee, Perth, Arbroath, Forfar and Edinburgh.
